1) The Supreme Court of India held on 5 November 2026 that the 24-hour limitation under Article 22(2) commences only when a person is really detained, including when an official physically restrains a person’s liberty. The bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Atul S. Chandurkar decided that the arrest and detention are not separate for this constitutional safeguard.

भारताच्या सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाने 05 नोव्हेंबर 2026 रोजी असा निर्णय दिला की, अनुच्छेद 22(2) अंतर्गत असलेली 24 तासांची मर्यादा तेव्हाच सुरू होते जेव्हा एखाद्या व्यक्तीला प्रत्यक्षपणे ताब्यात घेतले जाते-ज्यामध्ये एखाद्या अधिकार्‍याने त्या व्यक्तीच्या स्वातंत्र्यावर प्रत्यक्ष शारीरिक निर्बंध लादल्याच्या परिस्थितीचाही समावेश होतो. न्यायमूर्ती उज्ज्वल भुयान आणि अतुल एस. चांदुरकर यांच्या खंडपीठाने असे स्पष्ट केले की, या घटनात्मक संरक्षणाच्या संदर्भात ‘अटक’ (arrest) आणि ‘ताब्यात घेणे’ (detention) या दोन स्वतंत्र गोष्टी नाहीत.

2) On 6 November 2026, the Supreme Court nominated former Chief Justice of India Bhushan R. Gavai to lead a commission that is scrutinizing forest-rights orders in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Agasthyamalai landscape. The panel was created by a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta along with officer of the Central Empowered Committee and Tamil Nadu’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

3) India and the European Union concluded discussions for India’s association to Horizon Europe on 7 November 2026. The EU’s main research and innovation program spans from 2021 to 2027 and has a budget of €93.5 billion. Exploratory talks began in February 2026, with formal negotiations in July.

4) Lieutenant General Sushil Chander Mahant assumed the office of Director General of Integrated Training (DGIT) of the Indian Army on 1st November 2026 at the Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defense (Army) in New Delhi. He is the first alumnus of Sainik School, Sujanpur Tira to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

5) On November 6, 2026, the Uttar Pradesh government updated disaster relief assistance and doubled the compensation for a natural calamity fatality from ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh. The new norms are under the SDRF and NDRF guidelines and pertain to losses suffered between April 1, 2026 and November 4, 2026. They are expected to help more than 10 lakh farmers by the government.

6 नोव्हेंबर 2026 रोजी, उत्तर प्रदेश सरकारने आपत्ती निवारण मदतीमध्ये सुधारणा केली असून, नैसर्गिक आपत्तीमुळे होणाऱ्या मृत्यूसाठी दिली जाणारी भरपाई 4 लाख रुपयांवरून दुप्पट करून 8 लाख रुपये केली आहे. हे नवीन नियम एसडीआरएफ (SDRF) आणि एनडीआरएफ (NDRF) मार्गदर्शक तत्त्वांनुसार असून, ते 1 एप्रिल 2026 ते 4 नोव्हेंबर 2026 या कालावधीत झालेल्या नुकसानासाठी लागू आहेत. या निर्णयामुळे 10 लाखांहून अधिक शेतकऱ्यांना मदत मिळण्याची अपेक्षा आहे.

6) The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has published the Adaptation Gap Report 2026, entitled “Ready? Not. Climate impacts aren’t going to wait for us. “Adaptation finance has to increase.” The research warns that adaptation financing is significantly below what is needed, that institutional impediments are hampering implementation, and that climate impacts are intensifying, leading to growing loss and suffering.

7) The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified the Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) (Amendment) Order, 2026 which amends the passport and visa exemptions for specified foreign nationals including religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, Tibetan refugees, Sri Lankan Tamils and some long-term foreign residents.
